Embedded Firmware Engineer II

Work within the product development team to design, develop, and research new technologies that will further expand the product line of automated laboratory instrumentation. Provide hands on engineering expertise required for the research and launch of new products.

Essential Duties include:

  • Development of applications for embedded processors with Linux and FreeRTOS using C, C++, and other languages for instrumentation measurement, control, data acquisition/ logging.
  • Development of low-level hardware drivers, error handling, and event logging.
  • Participate in the development of the board support package for an embedded Linux platform
  • Interact with mixed disciplinary team members to define system requirements and develop products.
  • Investigate new technologies and vet proposals.Perform minor plumbing maintenance (e.g. replacement of repair of leaks in drains and faucets, unclogging of drains and toilets, replacement of toilets, thawing of lines, replacement of water filters, etc.).

Additonal duties:

  • Code documentation and maintenance of version controlled repository.
  • Occasional travel to customer sites to fully vet product requirements.
  • Occasional travel to attend trade shows and seminars relating to new technologies and products.


  • Bachelor of Science or higher in Electrical/Computer Engineering/Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Three to five years of firmware development.
  • Proficient in C, C++ with 32 bit ARM microcontrollers, SPI/I2C, DMA.
  • Experience with stepper motors and brushless motor control.
  • Experience with FreeRTOS and Linux.
  • Working knowledge of PID control and tuning.
  • Experience with version control software such as Subversion or GitHub.
  • QT5 GUI development knowledge a plus.
  • Strong debug and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work and learn independently.

Customer Technical Support. This includes product phone support, traveling on-site to install or repair products, training of customers, and assist with return to factory repair and support. Expect to travel up to 66% of the time, although 50% is the goal. Expense reports and repair reports must be completed accurately and punctually.

Essential duties include:

  • Dispatched from State College factory for domestic and international installations and service. Alternatively, dispatching from a remote location within the US is possible.
  • Perform work necessary to successfully complete new instrument installations, instrument upgrades, maintenance, and repairs, application troubleshooting, and other related service functions. Involves direct support of Cannon software applications on customer’s computer.
  • Must maintain daily contact with Service Scheduling Coordinator.
  • Responsible for filing field service reports upon completion of all service, installation, and support jobs.
  • Assist with phone support, service correspondence, and repairs when at the factory office.


  • Self-motivated, positive attitude.
  • Two-year technical degree or equivalent technical experience.
  • Strong technical problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Petroleum laboratory experience with distillation and flash point testers is desired but not required.
  • Experience in the following areas is preferred but not required:
    • microprocessors, sensitive digital and analog circuitry, and sensors
    • electro-mechanical instrumentation
    • phone and communications support
  • Licensed motor-vehicle operator with valid automobile driver’s license.

Production Engineer


Maintain legacy products by providing support to production and purchasing with engineering related issues and maintain documentation to avoid delays due to part obsolescence and vendor issues.

Essential duties include:

  • Ensure production drawings and documentation are correct and up to date following proper revision control and engineering practices. Initiate and carry out ECOs as required.
  • Troubleshoot electromechanical problems and assist production staff with problems due to design or supplier error.
  • Assist with purchasing department sourcing replacement components due to obsolescence.
  • Conduct experiments relating to product improvement under the direction of Design Engineers. Collect, compile and analyze data.
  • Participate in the research and compilation of technical information relating to component selection and vendor sourcing.
  • Order samples and work with the vendors to expedite components for evaluation.
  • Support the transition of products from engineering to production, including inventory transfer, review of assembly drawings and manuals, and training of production personnel.
  • Work with outside vendors to resolve quality issues.


  • Two year technical degree or equivalent work experience with electronic and mechanical designs.
  • Must have strong technical problem solving skills.
  • Ability to read schematics and basic troubleshooting of electronic assemblies.
  • Ability to solder.
  • Experience with engineering drawings and specifications of electrical/mechanical parts.
  • Working knowledge of CAD, Epicor or related MRP/ERP, and general MS Windows applications.
