The Cannon Marine Fuels Viscometer has been designed to accurately measure the viscosity of marine fuels between 30 and 1000 centipoise (mPa•s) at temperatures of 40°C, 50°C, 80°C, and 100°C. The MFV-1000 instrument can also be used for other applications consistent with its temperature control and viscosity measurement capabilities, including the ASTM D 244 consistency test for viscosity of asphalt emulsions.
The MFV-1000 is a rugged, lightweight instrument ideally suited for use in locations adjacent to fuel loading areas. The MFV-1000 is also highly suitable for determining the viscosity of lubricating oils and other liquids. In general, accuracy is 5 percent or better for most oilsbetter than that required by ASTM D 445 for residual oils at 50°C. The MFV-1000 consists of a base, adjustable heater cup/tray, sample cups (2), head unit, and spindle. A digital display on the front panel of the head unit indicates viscosity in centipoise (cP) or, if a density value is input by the operator, centistokes (cSt). The digital display also indicates the temperature, duration of test, and test status.
Running the Test
The operator fills a sample cup to the fill line and places the cup in the insulated holder. One touch on the keypad initiates the test. Most tests can be completed in less than 15 minutes. No operator supervision is required after the test has begun, freeing the operator to do other work during testing. The viscosity reading remains on the digital display until cleared. Following the test, sample cups are easily removed for quick cleaning.
Keypad Options
The RUN TEST key initiates a viscosity measurement. The SET TEMP key sets the target temperature. The SET DENS key allows input of sample density for display of kinematic viscosity in centistokes. The MENU key offers additional options for calibration or configuration. All configuration parameters are password-protected to eliminate unauthorized changes.
Safety Features
The MFV-1000 design includes several safety features. The unit performs an automatic self-test of display, memory, analog-digital converter function, and power supply voltage levels on startup. A thermostat in the heater cup senses any over-temperature fault condition and removes power from the heater until the temperature drops to a safe level. If the control RTD is disconnected, power to the heater cup is cut off. If the motor shaft and attached paddle are immobilized, power to the motor is removed.
